Richly provoking, sensual and erotic. These and many other words come to mind when reading this collection for the first time and through each subsequent reading. This by far is Dahni's most personal work to date. From cover to close, it is bound with the sinew of his soul and held by many tears that stain these pages. Perhaps, the words sensual and erotic strike concern in the hearts of some readers? By sensual, it is meant and implied that the poetry here can be more than just read. The imagery is so woven that the poems can almost be touched and experienced and 'sensed,' as if you were there. Eroticism is the romantic and passionate expression of love. Once celebrated by the ancient Greeks, Eros was the god of love. Cupid, is his offspring.
Interestingly, Cupid was once ridiculed by Apollo the sun god. Apollo and his love were both shot through their hearts by the vengeful arrows of Cupid. The arrow in Apollo's heart caused the endless pursuit of his love, but the arrow in her heart, made her flee. Once, Apollo almost caught her, but rather than to be subject to his love, she asked for and was turned into a tree by her father. This tree bore leaves that later became the laurel crown, the symbol of glory and victory in the ancient Greek Olympics. Perhaps this is the origin of lovers carving their initials on a tree as well? The poem 'Arrow' to follow here, has much depth of meaning and symbolism.
Having sent advance copies of this work prior to publication, another poet wrote their reflections:
"It's as if I can see your poems. Not
just reading the words but watching
them instead. They are beautiful, erotic and eerie. I have always had an
intense imagination, and a strong romantic strain. Your poems are the
sort I crave to read…."
'Ravnsong' is very much a true person and the words within these pages are as written in black ink of dyed blood, written from the heart. 'Ravnsong' is the true tale of two that found "the love of a lifetime." These are two very much real people who have never seen one another, met or touched one another. In Shakespeare's classic Romeo and Juliet, the characters could not bare to live without the expression of their love. In this work, these are not mere characters, but two that stand on either side the expanse of circumstance. The only bridge that connects them, is their love. They rather than die have chosen to LIVE, without the touch expression of this love.
Much of Ravnsong takes the reader into the world of the Native American Indian. Image and word often express themes of the SW portion of this country. The classifications of birds called corvids show the magpie, crow and raven. The raven has long been the symbol in myths and lore of creation (potent and vibrant). The raven is known as a 'shapeshifter (altered states of mind and body). As the 'deathbringer' the raven is all too familiar, as in Edgar Allen Poe's, 'The Raven'. The Raven can be seen atop many totem poles from many of the various tribes and families of the American Indian.
If you are in love, have ever been in love or want to be, Ravnsong is a 'must read'. Perhaps like myself, you will be encouraged and touched as deeply. This is said especially since it took so much encouragement for this work to be made available. Truly this is the first and only collection of poetry ever written by Dahni for an individual. Only after much feedback from many other people was he persuaded that this might benefit others as well. My personal belief is that this is so. Please write to I-Magine or me and tell us what this collection has meant to you.
Dahni works selflessly and unendingly to produce works which will touch a life, one life at a time. He works for others and not just to share his own works, but to showcase the talent of others. Numbers of those seeking Dahni's works, e-mail and even snail mail grows daily. With pleasure it is announced that much of this collection (but not all), appears online for you to enjoy, free of charge.
Deeply,
Arman
