Living in America

by Dahni

From emerald to diamond seeming ocean,
liquid skies in constant motion.
Light breaking on eastern sky,
while in night, the west is sleeping by.

From north to south; from desert to mountain range,
from plain to glade and every temperate change.
From snow and ice; from animal and tree,
five senses full, of variety.

Four seasons of every colored air
and noted music there.
 Deep caverns and glaciers pure;
tropics and every visual tour.

Gurgling creek and cranberry bog;
mountain stream and rising fog.
Forests of dogwood and evergreen,
of no ending look, as eye has seen.

Wonders of God and wonders of man,
architects of artistic plan.
Niagara falls - The Lady of Liberty,
Home of the brave and land of the free.

McGruff -Woodsy Owl and Smokey Bear;
all kinds of causes to champion there.
Ages - languages - races - colors and creeds,
passions - compassions and charitable deeds.

Pike's Peak - Williamsburg - Philadelphia - The Alamo,
first residents: the Indian and the Eskimo.
Revolution - the states and many a war,
that shook, but still - She holds here core.

Olympics- World Fairs - World Series and The Super Bowl,
where excellence is still Her goal.
University - Library - and tiny one room school,
where teach and show is, but the rule.

The Declaration - Constitution and Liberty’s Bell,
free for both fear and love to dwell.
A window where the world has it’s eye,
to seek and know if She’ll live or die.

Racial discrimination - problems and negative comment,
  strains of growth - pains and lament.
Poor she has in this the richest land;
mistakes often and justice demand.

Rich in opportunity where countless would defect,
but it is not possible to perfect.
Despite Her problems - youth and all She needs to get,
none else - anywhere, is close to her yet!

Motor City - Music City - Hollywood,
movers - shakers of right and good.
Orange groves - cactus - all kinds of birds and bees;
bears - alligators - peninsulas and keys.

Wheat field plain and Golden gate,
soaring eagle of fifty state.
Palatial mansion and cabin retreat,
food to the world of bread and meat.

The body politic to freedom soar,
the common, unique - the rich and poor.
Freedom to write - to think and speak,
Freedom to the mighty and freedom to the meek.
Freedom to move upon your feet,
free of fear’s consuming heat.

Freedom to prosper and freedom to dare;
born by the lives, that sacrificed there.
Free to think and free to choose,
free to assemble and free to lose.

The Fourth of July and celebration manner,
Old Glory -The Star Spangled Banner.
Baseball - Football - Basket and Hockey,
The Indy 500 - The Derby jockey.

Hot Rock - Sizzling Country - Cool Jazz and The Blues,
atheists - Christians - Muslims- others - Jews.
Black - White - Yellow - Red and every shade or hue,
all teeming masses, all yearning for the true.

Ice cream - snow cones and hot apple pie;
Hamburgers - hot-dogs and delight upon the eye.
Travel by car - boat - plane or feet;
dirt road - cobblestone - brick and pavement street.

Museum - sanctuary - auditorium and park;
hunting and fishing from daylight ‘til dark.
Play - movie - symphony - ballet;
television - radio, night and day.

The precious mutt - the lovable stray;
the tomcat - the old dapple gray.
The faithful friend -
until the end.
Of pet I write, but true it can,
be said also, of it’s man.

Patchwork quilts of people - places and things;
each part sewn together and chorus sings.
Somehow, each part in harmony blends;
all tears and cares by it’s whole - it mends!

Mixing bowl and melting pot,
those which have and some have not.
Parkplace penthouses - bayou huts
the Yankees and The Rebel mutts.

Painters - musicians - poets and scholars,
dreamers - thinkers - the working blue collars.
Great and statesmen all of special note
the simple barely, just afloat.

All in common, each with it’s part,
all and each have in the heart,
to reach for all the depth and height
and live and give of this precious right.

This bastion - the Lighthouse of freedom ring
from shore to shore on soaring wing
and to the world where they may crawl or grope
the land of freedom - the land of hope.

Of all it’s greatness and beauty best,
north - south - east and west.
Of all it’s infinite variety,
from puddle - pond to stream and sea.

Of all it’s vastness - of all it’s wealth,
where the dying come and find their health.
Of ever changing, but clinging to the best,
of toil and problem and peaceful rest.

Despite being kicked or thrown away,
it’s will to survive has made it’s day.
Often there - was no other plan,
but only prove: “...that I can!”

The greatest here for all to know and see,
is not even the Home or the Land of The Free.
For it’s greatest treasure,
without any measure,
 from scraps and pieces of a plan,
the mutt and the stray we call:

The A - MER - I - CAN!
