Can't Fill His Shoes
by Dahni
When I was just a young boy Oh, how tall he was and it seemed my whole hand could be held by just his two fingers. We’d walk and talk and my little legs ran fast just to keep up and I walked around in his shoes like boats and knew, that I - Can’t fill his shoes! Growing older I worked in his business to be near the man I loved, admired and wanted to know more deeply. Saw so many who loved, admired and wanted to be near him; heard them seek his counsel - advice or to have him as their friend and knew, that I - Can’t fill his shoes! Later in life I took his place and he was transferred and daily he was missed and asked about and I tried to do my very best, but knew, that I - Can’t fill his shoes! I’ve walked many a mile in life; wore out many a shoe and finally understood I must wear my own and perhaps, leave a trail for others to do the same and love as much and touch as much and help as much as I saw in him for I know, that I - Can’t fill his shoes! from the collections: THE TEAR & THE TENDER © 1997 1st and LIFE'S A TRIP © 1997 2nd by the same author anthology: ‘Prism of Thoughts’ © 1997 The National Library of Poetry
